Allison DOC Explained
Allison DOC is the dealer level software for connecting, communicating, and troubleshooting Allison Transmissions. Allison typically comes out with a new version once per year, and as of the date of this posting, they have officially released Allison DOC v13. To use this software, you must have both a laptop/computer and a communication device such as a DG Tech DPA5 or Nexiq USB Link, although any device that does J1939/J1708 will function properly. The Allison DOC software will read all the codes, has built-in troubleshooting, and can perform bi-directional functional tests such as resetting the adaptive shift. You can read more about Allison on their website.
What’s new in Allison DOC v13?
With any new software release, we love to do a complete install from scratch and see what new features the vendor has come up with. So lets walk through an installation, and see what has changed!
Allison Transmission Software Free
First of all, the program is a free download right from the Allison website. You won’t be able to use it without a license, but here is the link anyways: https://allison.noregon.com/downloadsite13/. The program is massive, at almost a 1 GB download link! This is larger than CAT, Detroit, and International software combined. They do have a fairly fast server, as it took about 13 minutes for me to download a copy of it.
Upon install, one of the first screens that pops up is the language pack option. As you can see from the list, it supports English, French (Canada), French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Thai. Quite an impressive list!
Over 10 languages to pick from for Allion DOC v13.
The rest of the install is pretty much clicking “next” until it actually installs. On our computer with a SSD drive it only took a couple minutes. Once the installation is completed, we are presented with a “License to Activate” screen. Allison has now added some additional security in the system, which is the “Certificate ID” that is shown at the bottom. In previous versions, you only had a License Key, so it is interesting to see Allison adding some more security to their software.
Once we entered our credentials, the program is installed and we then greeted by an update screen. Oh, how much we love updates to a program that has only been released for a day. Reading the screen, we see that the update is for Generation 5 TCM (Transmission Control Modules), and that it is another 180 MB. This part actually took longer than the actual 1 GB download from the link above.

Finally, after about 30 minutes of downloads, installations, and updates we are good to go! The screen looks exactly like the v12 screen, and there doesn’t appear to be any changes in the functionality of the program it self. Looking through the documents that came with the program, all of the updates referred to Allison Gen5 TCM updates, so our assumption is that the changes in the new version have to deal with working and communicating with the Generation 5 Allison Transmissions.
I did click around a bit to check out the software, but nothing seems to be different. The one thing I would like to mention is the SmartConnect feature of Allison DOC. If you leave this box checked, the software will attempt to use every adapter driver installed on your computer in order to discover which one is currently connected. My preference is to always uncheck this box, and then manually select my adapter. This saves time when connecting to a transmission, but you may find it easier to just leave it connected. See the screen shot below.
